I Casoni (Fishermen’s Huts)
Romantic shelters rise among the reeds and islets of the Bibione lagoon, preserving age-old traditions and embracing an evocative and unique atmosphere. They are living testimonies of the past, offering an unforgettable journey into the enchanting world of Bibione.
Your visit to the valley allows you also to admire the casoni, which are very old shelters used by fishermen when their work took them away from home for several days. Over the centuries, the construction techniques have changed little, using wooden poles, reeds, straw and wicker to build a single rectangular room and a pyramid-shaped roof with a central hearth. Even now, the casoni dot the small islands in the lagoon and, blending into the cane thickets, they almost seem like silent guardians of a mysteriously unique environment. Seeing them means not only discovering a charming natural oasis but also learning the traditions of the local fishing people. Jump on your bicycle and follow the signs for Terzo Bacino, continuing towards Prati Novi to find the casoni inhabited by local farmers until the 1950s.
