Opened to the public in 1976, this was founded due to the enthusiasm of a group of scholars in Portogruaro and other Tri-Venetian cities. They collected the results of work by about seventy associates who visit the Veneto and Friuli areas and even Bohemia and Moravia each month in search of new fossils. The museum is managed by the Gortani Palaeontology Association.
More than two thousand finds are arranged in displays that make up a guided tour for the visitor and tell of evolution during the half a billion years before the appearance of humans on earth.
The museum is located in an exhibition hall on the upper storey of the Villa Comunale of Portogruaro.
